Post subject: Outgoing email blocked by spam program I don't have????
Reply to Jim Beaver Reply with quote

I'm using OE. Suddenly today, I began getting outgoing email failures and
an error message reading "An unknown error has occurred. Subject
'Depression', Account: 'jumblejim', Server: 'smtp.prodigy.yahoo.com',
Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.7.1 Blocked by SpamAssassin', Port:
25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC69"

I don't have SpamAssassin on my machine, to my knowledge. EVERY outbound
email is being blocked with a similar error message. I can't send a message
to a single individual or to multiple recipients. I can't even send an
email to myself. Messages to newsgroups go out without problem. Inbound
email is unaffected.

I need help fast, as today is an important day for outbound email.

Thanks.

Jim Beaver

The error message tells you that the rejection is happening at your email
service provider's server. Contact them.

If a local anti-spam program were blocking e-mails getting delivered to
your SMTP mail host, you would not get as far as getting an error from
that SMTP mail host; otherwise, the e-mail never did get blocked by your
local anti-spam program. The 550 error status is issued by the SMTP
mail host, so your SMTP mail host *did* get the e-mail. It wasn't
blocked locally (on your host). Your e-mail provider is running
SpamAssassin and has it configured to check both incoming and outgoing
e-mails - and your outbound e-mail looks like spam. No one here can
help you. You will need to contact that e-mail provider and ask why
your e-mails look like spam. Maybe you are sending too many messages
per day, or to too many recipients, or the content of your Subject or
body of your e-mails look spammy, or you've committed some other
violation of their anti-spam abuse quotas. Only they will know.
Inbound e-mail isn't affected because it isn't violating their anti-spam
quotas.

Newsgroups don't do e-mail. Stop confusing messaging using one protocol
with another protocol. You are using SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer
Protocol) to send e-mails. You are using NNTP (Network News Transfer
Protocol) to send newsgroup posts. Just because the two protocols are
supported in the same client doesn't make them the same protocol.
Outlook Express supports POP (Post Office Protocol), IMAP (Internet
Message Access Protocol), SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol), and
HTTP/WebDAV (a Microsoft proprietary scripting language used to
communicate to their HTTP mail hosts for Hotmail - but which Microsoft
is dropping and switching to HTTP/Deltasync so OE will no longer work
with Hotmail). If they were all the same, they wouldn't have different
names.

Its a usefull observation to say that newsgroups are fine as it is to say he
can browse the net

It makes it clear that the problem is within a single application/service

Would you slate him for providing too litle info ?

Contact your ISP. Looks like they've installed SpamAssassin and it's
blocking your messages.

Your error message:
According to the MS knowledgebase 0x800CCC69 is an error that may occur
in OE when a firewall is misconfigured, for some reason MS seem to be less
than happy with the Freedom FW from Zero-Knowledge Systems Inc.
Whatever, that error code is for OE and incompatible or misconfigured
Firewalls.

Again, seemingly a firewall issue, "Server Response: 550.5.7.1" is listed as
an
issue with some firewall settings and OE, this MS KB article lists a
workaround
for Cisco or Mailguard support.microsoft....5/en-us
But if your Firewall is another, then it is that Firewall's support site you
have
to go to for a fix.

"Server error: 550" is smtp relay blocking, this can be caused by zillions
of
reasons, from IP blacklisting (Yours) and/or a previously assigned static IP
address has changed to one not available, but, a simple google suggests
that your complicated error message indicates your ISP gateway and your
assigned static IP address may be down, just a hic cup for the day?

I'd never heard of SpamAssassin, but a simple google reveals much about it,
again a little further googling reveals it to be an open source filter that
when
used on a linux based network can be a bit fussy about some attachments
sent from behind certain firewalls?
Were you sending binary attachments to a linux+SpamAssassin user?

I say just leave it a few hours then try sending an email without
attachments
to the same reciepient. If that gets through, it's your firewall, ISP and at
the
other end SpamAssassin.
Sounds like thats gonna be fun sorting it all out.

I just thought...
If indeed SpamAssassin has you blocked because of your static IP, that
in effect your specific PC+Connection has been identified, that could be
an indication that your PC is infected with a spambot?
